W.H. WILSON

W.H. Wilson, aged resident of Grinnell, died at the home of his son, G.G. Wilson, Tuesday, June 28, 1921. He was born in Yadkin county, N.C., June 7, 1841. He and his good wife, who survives him, were married on November 11, 1860. They celebrated their Golden Wedding ten years ago last fall at which time their children and grand children all met with them in a family reunion and presented them with $50 in gold. And each year since the Golden Wedding day they have had a family reunion on their wedding anniversary. It is not given to many couples to live together for sixty years and more.

Mr. Wilson was a southerner by birth and fought with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. At the close of the war he came north and the north never held a more radical and loyal republican. It was his boast that he never voted for but one Democrat, and that, he said, was Tobias Smith for sheriff.

He came to Poweshiek county in an early day, probably about 1866, and has lived in and near the county most of the time since. Besides his wife he leaves eight living children, 34 grand children, 27 great grand children and one great great grand child. Not long ago a picture of the representatives of the five generations appeared in the Des Moines Capital.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson had nine children, one of whom, Ella Douglas, of Cedar Rapids, died in 1907. Those living at this time are G.T. Wilson, of Unity, Wisconsin, Laura J. Steele, of Montezuma, G.G. Wilson of Grinnell, Addie Broadston, of Newton, Lillian B. Broadston, of Des Moines, R.D. Wilson of Niobara, Neb., Hattie Norris of Brooklyn and Stella P. Keyes of Oskaloosa. All except the two sons, G.T. and R.D. were here for the funeral service which was held in the Friends church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Charles Baurele, of Lerna, Ill., a minister of the same faith to which Mr. Wilson was converted in 1886.
