OBITUARY

In the death of Mrs. Julia A. Crane, which occurred Feb. 20, 1884, a useful life ended.

She was born Oct. 7, 1809, at Pompey, Onondaga county, N.Y., and was, at the time of her death, in her seventy-fifth year. She became a decided Christian at the age of seventeen, and from that time strove to be a winner of souls. In 1837 she was married and soon after set sail with her husband for southern India, accompanied by six other missionaries and their wives. Seven years of labor were given her in that, when the failing health of her husband rendered the return to this county imperative. After several years of rest, a life of home missionary service was entered upon, and its duties performed with loving zeal, until the death of her husband in 1859. The following year she removed with her family to this city, where the remainder of her life has been spent and has spoken for itself.

Mrs. Crane naturally possessed a cheerful disposition, warm impulses and ready sympathies. Always interested in the progress of moral reforms, she was ever earnest in her work for God and right, whether in a foreign land or in her native country. It is in her home, where she has lived quietly for the past six years, and to whose inmates her companionship was very dear, that she will be sadly missed; yet the church also suffers a loss in that it loses the prayers of one who, during the years of her retirement, prayed much for its welfare. Her long illness of six months, with all the attendant nervous restlessness of her disease, paralysis, brought out much patience in suffering. She often longed to be at rest, yet, submissive to God's will, expressed herself as "willing to live or die." Five days of weary suffering at the last, and she entered into rest.
