------------------------Maria Elizabeth Pickhardt was born on Nov. 15, 1873, in Sheridan Township, Poweshiek Co., Iowa, in which locality also she grew to womanhood. At the age of 16 she was confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Malcom, of which she remained a faithful member until the end.
Life's scope of duties broadened for her when on the 20th of Feb. 1896, she was united in marriage to Henry Oltrogge and the two took residence on a farm in Sheridan township. In this vicinity she spent her remaining years, of which all but about a year and a half were spent on the place where she departed this life. To this union seven children were born, three boys and four girls, all of whom are living.
The deceased was a successful as well as a faithful wife and mother. Her endeavors in the home were not directed solely to the seeking of material blessings, but she was earnestly concerned about its spiritual welfare also, of which fact the children who have grown up around her are living testimonies. To be sure, the trials incident to establishing a home and rearing a family were in no wise spared her, but patience was a marked virtue with her which was quite apparent in the last trying hours.
Mrs. Oltrogge's death was brought about by a complication of ailments that followed an operation for cancer early in the spring. The operation, from all indications, was successful, and the hopes of the family for the mother's recovery ran high only to be greatly shaken when bronchitis, asthma, pleurisy, together with rheumatism, an ailment from which she had suffered greatly a few years previous, developed recently in rapid succession. Despite this complicated illness, however, she seemed to be holding her own and the sudden change in her condition came quite unexpectedly. At about 5:30 on Thursday evening, June 21, seated in her chair to which she had been confined for three days and three nights she passed quietly to her reward, having reached the age of 54 years, 7 mo., and 21 days.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband; seven children, Louis, Fred, Mabel, Alma, Marie, Louise and Elton; one grandchild; a step-mother, Mrs. E. Pickhardt of Grinnell; and a sister and brother, Mrs. Martin Schultz and Louis Pickhardt, one sister having departed this life some years ago.
"One less at home!
A sense of loss that meets us at the gate;
Within a place unfilled and desolate;
And far way, our coming to await
One more in Heaven."On Sunday afternoon June 24th, at 2:30 funeral services were held at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Malcom and interment made in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery In spite of rather inclement weather a vast throng of friends attended the last rites. This together with the profusion of flowers that were offered showed in what esteem the deceased was held. The pall-bearers were H. Luttman, H. Ahrens, F. Puls, W. Hink, F. Jantzen and T.B. Kirkpatrick. The church choir rendered the following selections, "Lord Jesus, Point Thou Out The Way," "Rock of Ages," and "Jesus Lover of My Soul." Pastor Geo. F. Dirks conducted the service.
