RUTH B. ADKINS

Ruth B. Adkins, 88, of Grinnell died Monday, Sept. 7, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Linda Bibb, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Corwith, officiating. Organist was Margaret Wheeler, soloist was Barbara Chitwood.

Pallbearers were Mark and David Gaskill, Jason and Misty Adkins, Karen Haines and Bruce Thomas. Honorary bearers were Beth and David Douglass, Michael Adkins, Steve and Douglas Gulling, Sandra and Becky Gaskill, Bernice Blake, and Brenda Askeland. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of John Hotka and Nellie Martino Hotka Mahlerwein, she was born April 26, 1910, in Grinnell. The family moved to Marshalltown, returning to Grinnell in 1913. She received her education in the Grinnell schools, graduating in 1928.

She was married to Kenneth H. Adkins Feb. 10, 1929, in Valley Junction. They lived and worked in Grinnell until 1936 when they began farming in Jasper County. They moved to the Oak Grove community in 1939 and farmed for many years, retiring in 1977 and returning to Grinnell.

Mrs. Adkins had been a resident of the Mayflower since 1996.

She was a volunteer with girls' 4-H groups and was involved with county extension women's work for many years.

Surviving include one daugther, Gerry Gaskill of Corwith; one son, Gordon of Wayzata, Minn.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Jack Mahlerwein; her husband; one sister, Jennie Murrow; and an infant grandson.
