S.L. GORSUCH
S.L. Gorsuch, one of Poweshiek county's prominent farmers, who spent his life in the community south of Montezuma, died in the Methodist hospital in Des Moines Thursday, April 14. The Palladium says of him:
Mr. Gorsuch had been in ill health and was taken to the hospital in hopes that an operation would restore his health. He seemed to recover from this operation and then other complications developed and the end came quickly.
His body was brought here Friday evening and was taken to the home.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at Bethel Grove. The service was conducted by Rev. Scott, of Barnes City, and was attended by all the people of that community who had known the deceased all his life.
Burial was made in the Masonic and I.O.O.F. cemetery in Montezuma. At the grave the Masonic burial service was given.
Samuel Linza Gorsuch, second son of Joshua and Eleanor Gorsuch, was born August 31, 1859, on a farm in Mahaska county, one-half mile from his late home, and died at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines last Thursday, April 14th.
He was united in marriage to Alida A. Curry, September 4, 1887. To this union three sons were born--Robert, who died at the age of six years, Charles William and Lesley L., both living in Mahaska county, near their father's home.
Mrs. Gorsuch died March 26, 1896, and on February 21, 1897, he was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Gilbert. To this union were born four children--Mrs. Bertha May McCartney and James L. Gorsuch, living on farms near their father's home, and John Raymond and Clyde Cecil at home. There are also four grandchildren.
Besides his family he leaves to mourn his loss two brothers and three sisters--Robert and James Gorsuch, of Thornton, California; Mrs. Matilda Latchem, Mrs. Irene Curry and Mrs. May Bushong.
Mr. Gorsuch was a regular attendant of Bethel Grove Methodist church--always interested and helpful in the work of the church. He was an honored member of Lafayette Lodge, No. 52, A.F. & A.M. of Montezuma, and of the Eastern Star chapter of Barnes City.
His entire life of 61 years has been spent in the same neighborhood where he had the love and respect of all who knew him. A loving husband, an ideal father, a real companion for his children and happy as he saw them gathering about him. We can pay him no higher tribute than the words of love and respect and the sorrow for his loss expressed by his neighbors and friends. His has been a life worth while.
