MRS. W.H. ALLEY

Amelia D. Speth was born in Holstein, Germany, Oct. 18th, 1866, and died at her home on West street, Grinnell, Sunday evening, August 26th, after months of great suffering and patient waiting for a welcome messenger of deliverance.

She came to America in 1882, making her home at Davenport, Iowa. In 1887 she moved to Sheridan, Poweshiek county, and to Grinnell in 1891 where she has since made her home. January 2nd, 1896, she was united in marriage to W.H. Alley of this city. About 12 years ago Mrs. Alley lost her eyesight, passing through an experience that comes to but few in life, and out of which she emerged with a resignation to God's will that forever after marked her as one of the Lord's inner circle. The beautiful spirit with which she faced the end will always be an inspiration to those who had the privilege of ministering to her comfort during the months of patient suffering. We sympathize today with a devoted husband, a daughter by a former marriage, Miss Bertha Smith, her constant companion, Miss Hazel Alley and Mrs. Ellen Turner of Iowa City, a son, George Rodger Alley, of Grinnell, also four brothers, Julian, Henry, Amiel, and John Speth of Davenport, and one sister residing in Germany.

Mrs. Alley had a host of friends who will ever hold her in sacred memory.

The funeral service was held at the home, Rev. J.M. Brown, her pastor, in charge, and she was laid to rest in the Sheridan cemetery.

Of her it can be truthfully said, "She hath done what she could."
