OBITUARY

ABEL COOPER ARMSTRONG

Abel Cooper Armstrong reached the end of a long, active and useful life on Saturday morning at 6:30 o'clock, when he passed quietly away at his home, 402 Main street, aged 92 years and 29 days. The funeral was held from the residence yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. P.F. Marston, who spoke words full of hope and comfort. The Odd Fellows, an order of which Mr. Armstrong had been an active member since 1846, conducted the services at the grave and the pallbearers were chosen from among his lodge brothers. They were Samuel Nelson, Sr., D.W. Brainard, H.M. Bray, Barney Reynolds, C.K. Rich and George Milligan.

Mr. Armstrong was born in Rutland county, Vermont, March 21, 1820. He came to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1855 and moved to Poweshiek county on the last day of that year, settling first in Deep River. In 1879 he moved to Grinnell and has made his home here continuously since that time. During the days of his active life he was engaged in the coal business, being interested in two yards, one at the present location of Willson & Hastings and the other at the crossing of Fifth Avenue and the M. & St. L. tracks.

He is survived by a wife and four children; H.G. Armstrong, Mrs. W.C. Hastings and Mrs. J.W. Robison, all of Grinnell, and Mrs. Sylvester Williams, of Springfield, Vt.

Evan T. Whitney, of Deep River, and Horace Phelps, of Des Moines, came from out of town to attend the funeral.
