MRS. CLARA SPIRE SUCCUMBS SUNDAY; TUESDAY SERVICES

Mrs. Clara V. Spire, 91, of 609 Fifth Avenue, widow of William E. Spire, died early Sunday morning at a local hospital where she had been a patient the last five days.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester E. Custer, pastor of the Grinnell Methodist church, officiating. Organ music will be provided by Mrs. Willard Heffner.

Pallbearers will be Clarence Cogley, Clifford Jantzen, Raymond King, Lavern Lamb, Charles Mayo and Raymond Slocum. Interment will be in Sheridan cemetery.

The daughter of William Wallace and Sarah Ann Hauser Rice, she was born near Tracy, Iowa, on Jan. 19th, 1875. She attended the local schools near her family home and then taught school for a number of years.

On Apr. 25th, 1915, she was married to William E. Spire at the Methodist parsonage in Tama by the Rev. Clayworth. Mr. and Mrs. Spire farmed in Sheridan township until 1956, at which time they moved to Grinnell to make their home.

Mr. Spire preceded her in death on Oct. 29th, 1959.

She was a member of the Sheridan Methodist church and the Sheridan Ladies Aid.

Survivors include her son, Charles A. Spire of Grinnell; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. J. E. (Ethel) Hull of Blakesburg, Iowa; and two brothers, Walter Rice of Indianola and Richard Rice of Joplin, Mo.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Rice; and one sister, Mrs. Rosie Tobin.
