W.A. Hotchkin passed away Friday night about 9 o'clock at his home four miles west of Grinnell after a sudden and violent attack of flu. Mr. Hotchkin apparently had been in his usual health the day before, driving around to several farms during the day. Friday morning he complained of not feeling well and when the doctor was called later in the day he had a violent fever. He was aged 65 years, 5 months and 24 days.

Funeral services were conducted Monday morning from the Catholic church by Rev. Father M.J. Hannon, who performed the high mass. In his talk Father Hannon referred to the generous support which Mr. Hotchkin had always given the church and the interest which he had always shown in the spiritual and mental welfare of his children.

Pall bearers were Ed Comerford, Louis Hogdon, Owen Flannigan, Alex Devereaux, Amery Smith and John Linden. Interment was in Hazelwood.

William Arthur Hotchkin was born August 31, 1861, in Troy, Ill. At the age of eight years he moved with his parents to Grinnell, living there until the family moved to the farm four miles west of Grinnell.

He was united in marriage April 25, 1888, to Mary Ellen Dowling, of Newton, and they made their home in the vicinity of Newton for eighteen years. In 1914 the family moved to the old home place where they have made their home since.

Mr. Hotchkin is survived by his wife, one daughter and six sons, E.J. Hotchkin of Detroit, Mich., W.P. and V.D. Hotchkin of this vicinity, C.T. Hotchkin of Kellogg, Francis Hotchkin of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. William Devereaux of Adair and Odo Hotchkin, at home. One daughter died in infancy.

He is survived also by ten grandchildren and three brothers, Philip E. Hotchkin of Newton, J.H. and J.A. Hotchkin and one sister, Mrs. Martin Flannigan of Grinnell.

All the children, brothers and sisters were able to attend the funeral except two sons, E.J. Hotchkin of Detroit and Francis of Long Beach.

Mr. Hotchkin was one of the industrious and successful farmers of this community; a man respected and liked by those who knew him. His death is mourned by a wide circle of friends.
