VICTOR BENNINGTON, 66

Victor L. "Toad" Bennington, 66, of Searsboro, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with the Rev. Warren James, pastor of the Montezuma Regular Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, near Newburg.

The son of Victor A. and Mary Reel Bennington, he was born June 10, 1930, in Gilman. He was raised in the Newburg area and graduated from Newburg High School in 1948. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was stationed in England.

He was married to JoAnn Stanley Kroener on September 29, 1956, in Marshalltown. The couple made their home in Mechanicsville and Mt. Vernon before returning to the Newburg area in 1961. He was employed in his father's plumbing business until 1968. He worked briefly for Fisher Governor in Marshalltown and then the State Conservation Department at Rock Creek Lake in Jasper County, where he built the swimming beach. He moved to Searsboro in 1970, and worked for Farmhand in Grinnell and then with Criswell Enterprises, also in Grinnell. He was a member of the Newburg United Church of Christ and the Malcom American Legion. He was also a current member of the Searsboro City Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Victor is survived by five sons, Victor A. Bennington of Buda, Illinois; Kenneth M. Bennington of Grinnell; Barry L. Bennington of Lynnville; Duane W. Hannah of Marshalltown; and C. Thomas Peck of Kewanee, Illinois; three daughters, Donna J. James of Montezuma; Marilyn M. Chase of Buda, Illinois; and Diane McWilliams of Quartz Hill, Calif.; one sister, Betty Adams of Grinnell; nineteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Tree Fund and to the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City.
