NELIE BENNINGTON, LONGTIME RESIDENT OF AREA, DIES

Mrs. Nelie Bennington, 84, of 1233 Spencer Street, widow of Charles Samuel Bennington, died Friday evening at a Grinnell hospital following an illness of 10 days. She had been in poor health the past few years.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Hempenius, pastor of the Newburg United Church of Christ, officiating. Organ music will be provided by Mrs. Don Renaud.

Pallbearers will be Harry Adams, Virgil Doud, Darrell Keenan, John McIlrath, Vern Milgate and Claude Reeves. Interment will be in Hazelwood cemetery.

The daughter of George and Sarah Stone Vaught, she was born on April 10th, 1881, in Smith county, Va. She was married to Charles Samuel Bennington in December of 1901 in Virginia.

To this union were born five children, three of whom survive: Mrs. Barnett (Maude) Latham of Grinnell, Mrs. Afton (Sarah) Robertson of Marshalltown, and Frank A. Bennington of Clay, West Virginia.

In 1919, Mr. and Mrs. Bennington moved to Iowa and settled in the Rock Creek area where they farmed in several locations until retiring and moving to Grinnell in 1937. During the last few months, Mrs. Bennington had been living with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Vic Bennington of Newburg.

She is survived by her three children; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Betty Dutton of Briston, Tenn.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Charles, in 1950; two sons, Vance in 1942 and Victor A. in 1962.
