JOHN S. BURGETT OF DEEP RIVER PASSES AWAY
(By W.G. Ray)

The Herald regrets to know of the somewhat sudden death Sunday morning of J.S. Burgett of Deep River. The senior of the Herald knew John Burgett when he was a boy. In fact we helped him through multiplication tables, the rule of three and the McGuffey speller. He was a bright, attractive boy. He has been an active and leading citizen of Deep River ever since he was a boy and was at one time president of the Deep River State Bank. The Burgetts have been square men and John's character bore out that reputation. Unfortunately for him the Deep River State Bank was one of the banks which loaned too much money and when the depression struck us Mr. Burgett lost out but we have never heard a word said detrimental to his character.

He was a true and just man. The death of such a man is a serious loss to any community and the senior of the Herald is one of those who sincerely laments his death.

Funeral services were held this morning at 10:30. Mr. Burgett is a brother of Lee Burgett of Grinnell. Among the out of town people attending the funeral was Phillip Burgett of Chicago.
