MARGARET MCCANN

C. Margaret McCann, 93, of Mayflower, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at Mayflower Health Care Center.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Tuesday, May 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell with the Rev. William Reynolds, pastor of the church, officiating. Music will be Marilyn Kriegel, organist, and St. Mary's Choir. Interment will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Monday. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Parish Foundation in care of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell IA 50112.

She was born Dec. 24, 1913, in Marengo to James Thomas and Carrie Hart McCann. The family moved to Grinnell when she was an infant. She was a 1931 graduate of Grinnell High School, then studied in Des Moines to become a licensed hair dresser. Following her education, she returned to Grinnell and worked as a beautician for over 50 years, including over 40 years at the Modernistic Beauty Salon. She was an active member of the National Hairdressers' Association and the Cosmetologists' Association, holding offices in area affiliates of these organizations.

Margaret enjoyed travels to Europe, especially a side trip to Ireland, home of her grandfather, where she kissed the Blarney Stone. She also enjoyed a trip to Hawaii, and attending inauguration events for President Lyndon B. Johnson in Washington, D.C.

She was a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.

She is survived by two nephews, Chris McCann of Mequon, Wis., and Tom McCann of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Marie Healy, and four brothers, James, John and Michael McCann and an infant brother.
