STEVE SMITH, 82, SUCCUMBS MONDAY; SERVICES TODAY

Steve Smith, 82, Grinnell, died Monday evening at his home at 327 Sixth Avenue. He had been in failing health the past two years.

Funeral services were held this afternoon (Thursday) from the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. B.H. Thorlakson, interim pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Organ music was provided by Ed Bohstedt.

In charge of flowers were Miss Margaret MCann, Mrs. William Gossen and Mrs. Wilma Mott. Serving as pallbearers were Floyd Sharp, Jim Sharp, Guy Slaven, Gene Slaven, Wayne McDowell and Lawrence Vitera.

Odd Fellows rites were conducted by members of Grinnell lodge No. 358. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 6th, 1879, at Monticello, Ky., the son of George and Mary Ann Anderson Smith, one of a family of seven children. He came to Iowa in 1900 and settled in Grinnell where, on June 26th, 1907, he was united in marriage with Lila Cooper. One son, LaVerne E. Smith, was born to this union.

In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Smith is survived by two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Deliah Walters of Des Moines, Mrs. Flora Slaven of Grinnell, and Jim Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Mr. Smith was a member of the First Baptist church, the Masonic lodge, and the Odd Fellows lodge, all in Grinnell. He had received his 50-year jewel for 52 consecutive years as a member of the Odd Fellows.

He had been a member of the National Guard and had been employed in the Spaulding Buggy Factory and the Grinnell Washing Machine Co. when they were in operation here. Later he was employed at the Maytag Co. and served as custodian at Cooper School for 13 years and more recently at the Grinnell State Bank.

Also, he had been a member of the Grinnell Fire Department for 35 years.
