FORMER RURAL TEACHER, ELLEN HOWELL SUCCUMBS

Miss Ellen Howell, 68, Grinnell, succumbed Sunday morning at a local hospital where she had been a patient since Jan. 2nd.

Miss Howell had made her home just west of Grinnell with her sister, Miss Blanche Howell.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Bethel Methodist church with the Rev. Gene Burry officiating. Pianist will be Mrs. Wallace Williams.

Serving as pallbearers will be James Peak, Harold Brown, Robert Dale, Lawrence Decatur, Raymond Selle, and Martin Pearce. Interment will be in Bethel cemetery with the Smith Funeral Home in charge.

She was the daughter of Alfred William and Eva May Vaughan Howell and was born on Sept. 3, 1893, in Jasper county. Miss Howell attended the Richland township elementary rural schools and attended Grinnell high school. She taught rural schools in Jasper county and made her home in the Westfield neighborhood until moving with her parents and sister to the home west of Grinnell 31 years ago.

She attended Westfield Community church and served as pianist for many years. She was a member of the Westfield Ladies Aid and was serving as Sunday School superintendent at the time of her death. She was a former member of the Bethel Methodist church.

Preceding her in death were her father on Oct. 19, 1952; her mother on Jan. 3, 1958; and one brother, William.

Miss Howell is survived by her sister, Blanche, and her brother, Harvey, both of Grinnell. Also surviving are two nephews, Kenneth P. Howell and Charles L. Howell.
