BROOKLYN YOUTH DIES IN MISHAP

A 16-year-old Brooklyn youth was killed Monday evening in a one-car mishap on a gravel road southeast of Brooklyn.

According to State Trooper Judd Kahler, who investigated the accident with Trooper Jerry Jones and Poweshiek County Deputy Sheriff John Griffin, Carl Kilmer of Rte. 1, Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at the scene by Poweshiek County Medical Examiner Dr. Kenneth Caldwell. The mishap occurred at 6 p.m.

Kahler said Kilmer's car was northbound on the gravel road, topped a hill, and swerved to avoid an approaching truck. The car went out of control, crashed into a ditch, rolled several times, went through a fence, and struck a tree. Kilmer was thown from the car and died of multipal injuries.

OBITUARY

Carl Amos Kilmer was born Aug. 4, 1956, in Grinnell, the son of Harry and Dona Carter Kilmer. He was a student at BGM High School at the time of his death.

He was active in sports and was a member of the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include is parents; two brothers Harry Jr. and Dana; two sisters, Janyll and Launce; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Kilmer of Deep River; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Elsie Carter of Brooklyn; his maternal grandfather, Carl Carter of Chelsea; and his maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Alice Bolen of Brooklyn. He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandparents and his maternal great-grandfather.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at the Brooklyn Prebyterian Church, with the Rev. Richard Menzel officiating.

Burial was in Harmony Cemetery southeast of Brooklyn.
