CARL E. CARTER

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, Nov. 2, in the Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn, for Carl E. Carter, 85, of Brooklyn, who died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell.

The Rev. Paul Hughes, former pastor of the Hartwick Congregational Bible Church, officiated, and the organist was Marilyn Kriegel. Flower attendants were Gene and Betty Osborn and Gene and Joyce Morgan.

Honorary casket bearers were G.J. Manatt, August Van Renterghem and George Cowger. Casket bearers were Jack Wilkinson, Dock Blankenship, Dean Lippincott, Elmer Anderson, Harold Hiner and Richard Carter. Interment was in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery.

Carl Edwin Carter, son of Hilary Edwin Carter and Christina Smith Carter, was born July 6, 1913, east of Brooklyn. He was a lifelong resident of the Brooklyn area. He received his education in the Brooklyn school.

Carl was a self-employed earth-moving contractor, retiring five years ago. He was married to Elsie Bolen and they were later divorced. On Dec. 10, 1958, he married Marlene K. Wheeler in Kirksville, Mo.

Carl enjoyed going to auctions and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Thelma Ryan; one brother, Delmar Carter; and two grandchildren, Carl Amos Kilmer and LuAnn Bacon.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene; two daughters, Donna Frank, and her husband, Glenn, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Kathy Hash of Brooklyn; one son, Duane Hobbs, and his wife, Vicki, of Victor; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established for East Poweshiek Ambulance Service.
