VELMA M. KIES

Mrs. Velma M. Kies, 87, of Malcom, died Friday morning, Oct. 27 in Friendship Manor, Grinnell.

Services for Mrs. Kies were Monday, Oct. 30, in the United Methodist church, Malcom, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Wm. Daylong and Mrs. Jerome (Carol) Wehr officiated. Organist was Mrs. Marilyn Kriegel and soloist was Chip Bennett.

Special selections were "Good Night Down Here, Good Morning Up There" and "Rock of Ages." Flower attendants were Joyce Otto, Regina Urfer and Gregg and Diane Hawkins.

Honorary casket-bearers were Connie Nelson, Cindy Holcomb, Cathy Bennett, Susan Gant, Chalen Foster and Rochelle Araiza. Casket-bearers were Steve Kies, David Kies, Douglas Kies, J.R. Kies, Dan Kies and Bill Araiza. Interment was in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.

Nevenhoven Funeral Home of Brooklyn was in charge of arrangements.

Velma Margaret Bauman Kies, daughter of Frank Bauman and Florence Whisenand Bauman, was born Sept. 16, 1908, in Draper, S.D., and was graduated from high school in 1927. In the summer of 1927 she attended summer school at Dakota Wesleyan. She taught in a country school near home during school years 1927-28. In 1929 she taught school at Hurley, S.D., and worked at a drug store in Viborg, S.D.

On May 3, 1929, Velma was married to Allen Frank Kies in Viborg. They lived in various locations while Mr. Kies worked in road construction.

They moved to Marengo in 1934, later lived in Hartwick, Brooklyn and Malcom. They operated a hardware store in Malcom and Brooklyn, retiring in 1965 when they moved to Branson, Mo. In 1974 they returned to Malcom, and Mr. Kier died Aug. 1, 1976. For the past one and one-half years, Mrs. Kies has been a resident of Friendship Manor, Grinnell.

She was a member of the Malcom United Methodist Church and was an honorary member of the Malcom UMW.

Surviving are two sons and their wives, Richard and Beverly Kies of Grinnell, and James and Janice Kies of Topeka, Kas.; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Kies of Brooklyn; two brothers, Lyle Bauman of Malcom and Harold Bauman of Hollister, Mo.; one sister, Ruby Cowman of Pleasantville; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Kies was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sons, Wayne, Robert and David; five brothers, Leslie Bauman, Bill Bauman, Harry Bauman, and Freddie and Glen who died in infancy; and two sisters, Lois Sutfin and Alice Mallory.
