JERRY L. HOLCOMB, 73

Jerry L. Holcomb, 73, of Grinnell, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with the Rev. Jack Mithelman, of Grandview College, officiating. Casket Bearers were Ed Locker, Jody Matherly, Steve Meek, Denny Mitchell, Sam Osborn and Clayton Tiedemann. Honorary Bearers were Jim Ahrens, Clarence "Junior" Holcomb, Darrell Lamb, Kenneth "Pepper" Saunders and Adrian Versendaal. Interment was at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Memorials may be directed to the Grinnell Police Department's Building Fund.

Jerry was born on Aug. 30, 1935, in Grinnell, to Lester and Viola Mitchell Holcomb. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1954.

On Aug. 30, 1957, he was married to Janet Mithelman in Des Moines. Jerry farmed in the Grinnell area, and also worked for the Grinnell Beverage Company and Grinnell Feed and Grain. He served with the Grinnell Police Department for 16 years. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he worked as a truck driver for Heartland Express.

Jerry enjoyed riding his motorcycle and camping at the Iowa State Fair. He also enjoyed riding horses at the Grinnell Saddle Club, and competition with his horse pulling team.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Holcomb of Grinnell; one son, Jerry "Butch" Holcomb of Gilman; one daughter, Brenda (Todd) Dominik of Lee's Summit, Mo.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Russell Holcomb of Conway, Ark.; and two sisters, Judy Macomber of Houston, Mo., and Margaret Meek of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother William "Bill" Holcomb.
