NELLIE AHRENS DIES FRIDAY AT HOSPITAL

Miss Nellie Marie Ahrens, resident of Grinnell most of her life, died at a local hospital Friday, Dec. 24.

Nellie Marie Ahrens, daughter of Henry Herman Ahrens and Ida Schultz Ahrens, was born on a farm in Sheridan Township on August 29, 1896. She was baptized in early infancy at Trinity Lutheran church, Malcom and renewed her baptismal vows at her confirmation on August 20, 1911.

She moved with her parents to a farm in Malcom Township as a young girl. She lived for a while on Elm Street in Grinnell and then moved with her parents to their farm east of Grinnell. Since 1926 she had made her home at 1839 6th Avenue. She received her education in the rural school of Malcom Township.

She was preceded in death by her mother and her only brother Lester Ahrens. Survivors include her father Henry and a sister-in-law, Lola P. Ahrens, both of Grinnell, and two nephews S.Sgt. Robert Ahrens, stationed at Lake Charles Air Force Base in Louisana, and Richard, a student at Ottawa University in Kansas. There remain also some cousins and a multitude of friends.

The deceased was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell. She was a faithful and conscientous participant in its services and activities as long as health permitted. About two years ago her health began to fail and she never again fully recovered.

She was taken to a local hospital on December 18 and passed away quietly at 2:20 Christmas Eve afternoon. She had reached the age of fifty eight years, three months and twenty five days.

Funeral services were Monday afternoon at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Rev. Donald Loots officiating and interment in Trinity Lutheran cemetery. Soloist was Terry McKean, and organist Mrs. Waldo Johnson. Pallbearers were Gerhard Mader, Carl Kuch, Erwin Schultz, Elmer Burnson, Loren Edgington and Sam Urfer. Flower committee was Mrs. Loren Edgington, Mrs. Della Coburn, Ida Burnson. James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
