EGBERT S. PILGRIM

Egbert S. Pilgrim was born at West Jersey, Stark county, Illinois, Oct.. 11, 1860, and lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Croft Pilgrim, in Stark county until 1878 when he came with them to Grinnell, Iowa.

He was united in marriage Dec. 7, 1886, to Miss Mary Sulser of this place. To this union were born four children, Croft aged 13, Raymond aged 10, Egbert aged 4 and Mary a child of one, all of whom are living. The home life of Mr. and Mrs. Pilgrim was remarkably happy and each was a tower of physical and moral strength to the other.

The wife and mother died May 3, 1902 and the care of the four children devolved on him. He struggled hard to be both a father and a mother to his children but the strain was too great for him and his health began to fail some months ago. He took frequent trips to Oskaloosa for treatment and on one of these trips, April 8th, was prostrated at the home of his brother and grew rapidly worse till death relieved him of his sufferings at 5:30 a.m. April 15. His last morning was a peaceful one and from a quiet slumber he passed into the long sleep which knows no awakening.

The funeral services were conducted from the home of his father south of the city this afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev. S.R. Robinson and the interment was in Hazelwood cemetery where Rev. E.M. Vittum had charge of the service.

Mr. Pilgrim had lived all the mature years of his life in this community and was well and favorable known. He was a prosperous and progressive farmer, a splendid citizen, a good neighbor, a kind loving husband and father. He gave his strength for the little ones who are left orphaned by his death and has gone to his rest mourned by the entire community.
