MRS. LAURA JUDD SHIFFLETT

Laura J. Judd, daughter of Eli P. and Sarah Judd, was born near Princeton, Ill., October 22d, 1840, and died at her home in Grinnell, October 15th, 1917, age 76 years, 11 months and 23 days.

Her girlhood days were spent on her father's farm near Princeton. She was educated in the public schools and at the seminary at Mt. Morris, Ill. On March 1, 1860 she was married to Asher Shifflett who passed away January 1, 1913.

To them were born seven children, five boys and two girls. Of these five are living, George, of Lewiston,Mont., Louis, of Grinnell, Clarence, now in the U.S. Army, and located at Trenton, N.J., Mrs. Grace Kingsland and Mrs. Ione Dunning, both of Grinnell.

In the spring of 1866 the family moved to Poweshiek county, settling on a farm in Sheridan township. At that early day the country was new and thinly settled and the Shiffletts passed through the privations and hardships incident upon a pioneer life. They belonged to that rapidly diminishing band of early settlers by whose rugged character, fortitude and perserverance the soil has been subdued, schools established, churches erected and cities built, and by whom a rich civilization has been bequeathed to our day.

Grandma Shifflett was a woman of strong and abiding faith. In June, 1885, she was baptized at Montezuma by Elder G.W. Mapes, and became a member of the Christian church at Madison. She loved her church with a passionate devotion, and after the church was organized at Grinnell she became one of its strongest supporters and was active and interested in all departments of its life.

The family removed to Grinnell in the winter of 1892 where the deceased resided continuously until death. She bore her long and distressing illness with heroic fortitude and awaited in calm patience and resignation her summons to the life beyond. Her passing means the loss to the world of an honored and useful life. She will be greatly missed and sincerely mourned.

In addition to the children she leaves two brothers, Douglas and Mark Judd, and four sisters, Mrs. J.D. Carpenter, Mrs. Jacob Teraberry, Mrs. Chas. Bossler and Mrs. James McDowell. There are thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was an active member of the Rebekahs and the Woman's Relief Corps.

The funeral services were held yesterday. Short services at the home were conducted by Rev. A.C. Stowe and services at the Malcom M.E. church by Rev. W.B. Wilson. Interment was in the Malcom cemetery. The pall bearers, all nephews, were Joseph, Forrest and Reynolds Carpenter, Glen Teraberry, Fred Frease and John Darr.
