ALETHA PALMER SERVICES HELD

Aletha J. Palmer, 96, of Grinnell, formerly of Newburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, at Friendship Manor.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with Tom Palmer, pastor of the Cedar Rapids Friends Church, the Rev. Ken Wallace, pastor of the Newburg-Chester Parish, and Del Coppinger of Newton officiating. Organist was Alice Renaud, and vocalists were Jan Hunerdosse and Kris Palmer. Pallbearers were Steve Hickman, Bob Hunerdosse, Ron Hunerdosse, David Palmer, Dennis Palmer and Gary Palmer.

Burial was in Chester Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Newburg United Church of Christ.

The daughter of William C. and Christine C. Brown Dimit, she was born Oct. 23, 1887, in the Haven community near Tama. She moved with her family to the Chester area near Grinnell and attended rural school.

Following her education, she went to work at the Grinnell Glove Factory and later moved to California where she worked in apricot canneries. She was also employed at a department store in Tacoma, Wash.

On Dec. 18, 1912 she was married to George W. Palmer, in Grinnell. They lived on the A.H. Palmer homestead south of Newburg, moving into Newburg in 1955.

Mrs. Palmer was a charter member of the Federated Club of Newburg and was also a member of the Newburg United Church of Christ.

She is survived by her children, Anson Palmer of Westminister, Calif., Virgil Palmer of Grinnell and Marie Hunerdosse of Fairfield; 14 grandchildren; and one brother William R. Dimit of Aloha, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Kenneth Palmer; one daughter, Ethel Christine Palmer; one great-grandson; two sisters, Catherine Montgomery and Ethel Kirschberger; and two brothers, G.V. Dimit and Howard Dimit.
