CHARLES THOMAS EVANS

Charles Thomas Evans, son of John and Esther Simpkins Evans, was born at Davenport, Iowa, Sept. 1, 1870, and passed away after several months of failing health at 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Dec. 30, at his home at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 29 days.

His family moved to Grinnell in 1881 and lived in the Maple Grove neighborhood south of Grinnell for many years. He was one of eight children, all of whom have preceded him in death with the exception of one sister, Mrs. Charles Wells.

On November 28, 1895, he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Berriman. They established their home in and near Grinnell. To this union four children were born: Gladys, Floyd, Elsie and Donovan. Three of the children, Gladys, Floyd, and Elsie, were stricken by the flu epidemic of 1918 and passed away within a period of two weeks. After a lingering illness, Mrs. Evans passed away Nov. 21, 1942. Mr. and Mrs. Evans were both active members of the First Baptist church.

Mr. Evans served as a rural mail carrier for 30 years, retiring in 1935. At that time he devoted his activities to his farm in partnership with his son, Donovan.

December 31, 1945, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Severina Sawyer and they have made their home in Grinnell.

He is survived by his widow, one son, Donovan; one grandson, Larry Evans; one sister, Mrs. Charles Wells of Montezuma; eight stepchildren, Mrs. Hanna Twedt, Mrs. Esther Brown, Mrs. Mildred McCartney, Mrs. Sylvia Todd, Mrs. Betty Shea, and Arthur, Tillman and Thomas O. Sawyer and many nieces and nephews.
