JOHN SCHMITZ

John Schmitz was born in Prussia, Germany, March 27, 1852. In 1872, at the age of 20 years, he came to America and on February 15, 1879, was united in marriage with Caroline Hartzel, at Norway, Iowa.

They came to Grinnell in 1880 and settled on a farm just south of town, where they have since resided.

Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Schmitz--one daughter, Anna, died in infancy, and five other children survive their father. They are John, Francis, Emery, Mrs. Henry Schmidt and Mrs. Ernest Jarboe. In addition Mr. Schmitz leaves thirteen grandchildren.

For some time he had been in failing health and was taken to the Mercy hospital in Iowa City, in October, 1916.

Death came on July 14, 1918. The body was brought to Grinnell and Wednesday morning funeral services were held in the Catholic church, conducted by its pastor, Rev. M.J. Hannon. Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery.

In addition to the children and grandchildren, he is survived by a brother, John, of Brooklyn, and a sister, Miss Mary, of this city.
