OBITUARY

ROBERT LEWIS, 67 OF GRINNELL

Robert Wayne Lewis, 67, of Grinnell and formerly of Lynnville, died on Monday, August 11, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 15, 2008 at Woodland Cemetery near Lynnville. Officiating will be Rev. Jerry Morningstar with the Sully Community Church.

Memorials may be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Robert was born on October 14, 1940, the son of William Dean and Retha Mae Holdsworth Lewis in Lynnville, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School with the class of 1959.

On January 11, 1962, he married Rae Ann Royce of Kellogg, Iowa, in Cocoa Beach, Florida. From this union, their son Michael W. Lewis was born.

"Uncle Bob" served his country for 20 years before retiring from the United States Air Force on July 31, 1979. His family traveled and visited many different countries while he was enlisted.

He enjoyed hunting and trapping and liked to go metal detecting with his friend Kenny. Uncle Bob enjoyed his nephew Matt's Figure 8 races, going often with his close friends Mel and Lois Harthoorn. He loved to watch his nieces and nephews in any sport or activity that they were doing.

Uncle Bob is survived by his brother, Don (Shirley) Lewis of Kalona, Iowa; his sisters, Millie Van Soelen of Sully, Iowa, Phyl (Bruce) Beierle of Morrison, Colorado and Dot (Denny) Zylstra of Lynnville, Iowa; sister-in-law, Lorene "Rene" (Mike) Snook of Boynton Beach, Florida; brother-in-law, Cliff Anthony of Payson, Arizona; and several neices, nephews and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 2003, his son in 1993 and his sister Bettie Anthony in 2003.
