IRENE HAYS RITES TUESDAY

Mrs. Irene Mary Hays, 67, the wife of Max M. Hays of Holiday Lake, Brooklyn, died suddenly Saturday morning near Brooklyn of an apparent heart attack.

The daughter of Robert Lincoln and Ella May Sanborn Haynes, she was born on her parents' farm south of Tama Dec. 16, 1904. Shortly after her birth, her parents moved to Bradgate, Iowa, where she attended the public schools. She attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and later taught four years it the rural schools in Sheridan and Chester townships north of Grinnell.

She was married to Max Mohler Hays March 1, 1928, at Oskaloosa, and the couple had two children--Marlan Max Hays, who died at the age of 10 in 1943, and Mrs. William E. (Allene) Brobst of Denver, Colo. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Hays farmed in Sheridan Township until 1943 when they came to Grinnell. During that period, Mr. Hays was associated with the Norris and Hays Plumbing and Heating firm here. In 1970 the couple moved to Holiday Lake.

Mrs. Hays was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational and the Women's Fellowship of the church. She was a charter member of the Sonora Grange and the Grinnell Historical Society. She had held several offices in her church and the Grange.

Mrs. Hays is survived by her husband Max; her daughter Allene; two grandchildren, Laurie Ann and Steven Hays Brobst; and her brother, Charles J. Haynes of Omaha, Neb. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hays will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Grinnell United Church of Christ-Congregational, with the Rev. Newell E. Davis officiating. Organist will be Norman Goodbrod, and flower bearers will be Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Dare and Mrs. Lester Hendrickson. Pallbearers will include Robert Brobst, Merle Harris, Wayne Hendrickson, Robert Saunders, Bernard Schmitz, and Clair Strand. Honorary pallbearers will be Ola Gildersleeve, Raymond Harris, Lester Hendrickson, John Hill, Kyle Jones, and Clair Luse.

Burial will be in Chester Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be left at the United Church of Christ-Congregational for forwarding to the Arthritis Foundation.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.
