R. CARROL RYAN SR.

R. Carrol Ryan Sr., 79, of 943 St. Francis Dr., Grinnell, died of cancer Friday, Nov. 19, at the Montezuma Nursing Center.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with Angie Hulin, pastor of the Gilman Community United Church of Christ, officiating. Organist will be Janice Everts, and honorary bearers will be Jennifer Fuhs; Angela, David, Justin and Leslie Ryan; and Casey Sims.

Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman. Fraternal rites will be conducted by members of the Cyrus Masonic Lodge of Gilman, and graveside rites will be conducted by members of Paul-Ward American Legion Post, also of Gilman.

Friends may call at the funeral home begining at noon Tuesday. The family will be present at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

He was born Oct. 9, 1920, near Taintor to Leslie and Hulda Fleming Ryan. he was raised on the family farm and attended rural Mahaska County schools. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was married to Donna Pauline Farley Nov. 14, 1943, in Chicago. They farmed near Ewart until moving to Gilman in 1956.

Mr. Ryan was employed as a toolmaker for the KIOWA Corporation of Marshalltown from 1956 to 1980. Following his retirement, the couple moved to Grinnell.

He was a member of the Gilman Community United Church of Christ, Paul-Ward American Legion Post No.149, Cyrus Masonic Lodge No. 338, VFW Post No. 8876 of Montezuma, and the Elks Lodge and Eagles Club of Grinnell.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard C. Jr. of Quinlan, Texas, and Keith D. of Marshalltown; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Max of Marshalltown and Carl of Tripoli.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Bruce.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Francis Manor or the American Cancer Society.
