Grinnell Herald (Grinnell, Iowa) Feb. 22, 1889

--To those who knew that Mr. Geo. W. Crain, his son, Charles, and daughter, Mrs. Lee Welch, and husband, had left for Ohio for a visit last week, the news of Mr. Crain's death was a great surprise. The party left this city last Thursday in happy anticipation of a pleasant trip; but when they reached Chicago Mr. Crain was stricken with heart trouble and sank rapidly, his life passing away the following day. His children returned with his body to this city Saturday morning, and the funeral services, conducted by Revs. Wright and Heilner, were held Sunday at the Episcopal church. The deceased was a member of the Masonic order, and the members of Hermon lodge, of which Mr. Crain was a member, conducted their beautiful and impressive service at the cemetery. The deceased was a resident of Poweshiek county thirty-three years, having moved form Carthage, N.Y., in 1854. He was born at Rutland, Jefferson Co., N.Y. During the last two years he has resided at Des Moines. He was county auditor of this county one term, and while a resident of this city was a mason by trade. The deceased had reached his seventy-fifth year. He leaves a wife and three children.
