Grinnell Herald (Grinnell, Iowa) Feb. 3, 1893

--Mary A. Reed was born at Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vt., March 14, 1827, and died at Grinnell, Jan. 29, 1893,--lacking but one and one-half months of being sixty-six years of age. She was educated at Barre Academy, Vt., and afterwards spent many years as a successful teacher, not only in her native state but also, in Wisconsin. March 8, 1858, she became the wife of James Wheaton, at Pawlet, and lived there until their removal to Grinnell, arriving here March 5,1869. Here she had a wide acquaintance with the earlier inhabitants and was universally respected for her quiet, but earnest Christian character and calm, womanly preception. For several years she had been afflicted with a cancer and for about eighteen months she had been confined to her home nearly all the time. Though she suffered great pain during her last days she was never heard to complain. Her Christian experience was a fruitful one. She became a member of the Congregational church at the age of fifteen and ever remained a faithful and consistent member. The funeral was attended at the house Wednesday, conducted by Rev. Mr. Vittum. The weather was very rough, but a large assembly of friends gathered to pay homage to a departed friend. Deceased leaves a husband and four children to mourn her loss,--John J. Wheaton in Chicago, Charles at San Francisco, George at Ottumwa and Mary at home.

CARD OF THANKS

We wish to extend our hearty thanks to all our friends and neighbors who have so kindly and generously extended to us their sympathy and assistance in the past months and days of our sorrow and bereavement.
JAS. WHEATON AND FAMILY.
