GEO. H. STOCKING

George Howell Stocking, who died at his home in this city on Saturday, Feb. 12, was born in Prattsville, Greene county, N.Y., on Feb. 22, 1833. He married Mary Ann Banum on Oct. 1, 1857, and about nine years later Mr. and Mrs. Stocking moved west, settling for one year in Whiteside county, Illinois. In 1867? Mr. Stocking came to Iowa and chose a piece of land in Sheridan township, Poweshiek county, for a future home. The following year the home was built, and for twenty-eight years these industrious people followed the pursuit of farming. They were prosperous, and twenty years ago found them able to retire from active farm life. They moved to Tama, where, in 1901, Mrs. Stocking passed away. Four children came to bless the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stocking, two of whom, Mrs. Ray Croskrey, of Tama, and Arthur, survive the death of their father. Four grandchildren remain to cherish the memory of this fond grandparent. Two brothers of the deceased live in Sterling, Ill. Six years ago Mr. Stocking was united in marriage with Mrs. Harriet Hummiston, and after this brief period of pleasant fellowship, the wife is bereft of her companion, but the memory of these years will always be precious to her. At the close of meetings held here by Dr. Mahood, Mr. Stocking united with the Methodist church.

Funeral services were conducted at his home by Rev. Wm. C. Cleworth on Monday morning, and interment was made in the family lot in the Sheridan cemetery.--Tama Herald.
