AN OBITUARY OF GEORGE W. LUCAS

George Washington Lucas was born August 11, 1863, near Ablington, Va., and passed away at his home in Ewart, Saturday, June 25, at one o'clock at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 14 days. He was one of six children and his parents were Mr. and Mrs. David Lucas who were the slave property of Frank Preston. All have preceded him in death except one brother, Abraham Lincoln Lucas of Des Moines.

In 1870 the family migrated to Poweshiek county, Pleasant township, where the deceased lived until his passing. He had a very kind heart and was always willing to assist those in trouble with kind deeds and words.

Farming constituted his life's work and for many years he owned and operated a steam threshing equipment until failing health forced him to dispose of this enterprise. After this he worked for different farmers in the Ewart vicinity and raised poultry. He also assisted neighbors at various times in the capacity of a nurse and was in considerable demand as his sacrificing and patient characteristics were a great asset in the work. He possessed no bad habits, was pleasant, truthful and good natured.

Mr. Lucas did not unite with any church but was a good Christian and firmly believed in Christ.

Besides his brother, he leaves to mourn his passing a cousin, John B. Lucas of Grinnell and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held in the Ross Funeral Home at Montezuma Sunday, June 26, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E.W. Gregson of Grinnell. M.R. Mays of Newton sang "Going Home" with Mrs. Mays as accompanist.
