GEORGE BUCK DIES AT NURSING HOME

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today (Monday, Dec. 14) at the United Church of Christ in Gilman for George Buck, 97, former resident of the Grinnell, Newburg and Gilman communities, who died Friday morning, Dec. 11, at the Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton.

The Rev. Ralph Beebe officiated at the services.

Organist was Mrs. Richard Coppock. Vocalists were Larry Marsh and Mrs. John Fobrycky.

Pallbearers were Aaron Fanton, Harold McCulloch, Denver Walker, Dale Buck, Robert Lavender and Harold Buck.

Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman with the James-Schalinske Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Buck was born on a farm near Sabetha, Kan. He came to Iowa when in his teens and worked on a farm west of Grinnell.

At the age of 21, Mr. Buck went to Gilman and learned the blacksmith trade. While in Gilman he married Clara Lavender, daughter of the Congregational minister, the Rev. R.F. Lavender.

Mr. and Mrs. Buck began their married life in Newburg where Mr. Buck operated a blacksmith shop for many years. Two children were born to this union, a daughter, Gretchen, and a son, Harry, who died in 1966.

Mr. Buck was active in Sunday school work in the Congregational church and was superintendent for many years and active in the church choir. He also served as director of the Newburg School.

In 1912, Mr. Buck bought the general store in Newburg. On June 6, 1916, fire destroyed the store so the family moved to Grinnell where Mr. Buck built and operated a store on the corner of 6th Avenue and Summer Street.

In 1918, Mr. Buck moved his family to a farm. After farming several years he moved to Williamsburg and did blacksmith work until his health failed. He then returned to Grinnell. After he regained his health, he did carpenter work, furniture building and refinishing.

Mr. Buck's wife passed away in January, 1949, and shortly thereafter he moved to Wichita, Kan. He also made his home with his daughter before returning to Grinnell.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Glenn (Gretchen) Marsh of El Dorado, Kan.; a brother, Ben Buck of Grinnell; four grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
