MRS. SUSAN BURROUGHS CHILD DIED THURSDAY, AGED 88 YEARS

Mrs. Susan Burroughs Child, the widow of Aldace W. Child and one of Grinnell's oldest residents, passed away about 3:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon in a local hospital after a long period of gradually failing health, aged 88 years and 10 months.

Mrs. Child, the daughter of William and Pricilla Breeden Burroughs was born in Ripley county, Indiana, March 13, 1860, and came to Iowa by wagon with her parents and quite a caravan of Indiana people when she was five years old. They settled in Jasper county. After the death of her father in 1875, the family moved to Grinnell to take advantage of the schools. Here Mrs. Child grew to womanhood, attending the Grinnell schools and graduating from college in 1884.

After her graduation she taught for a time and also attended a school of art in Boston. On Oct. 16, 1903, she was united in marriage with Aldace Walker Child, who preceded her in death several years ago.

She was the last surviving member of her family. Only nephews and nieces are left.

She had been a consistent member of the Congregational church since coming to Grinnell and was active in the Drummond club, the Historical and Literary club and the WCTU as long as her health permitted. She was always interested in everything that was beautiful and good and this interest persisted even in her days of failing health.

Funeral services conducted by her pastor, Rev. Leland W. Mann, were held at the James funeral home Saturday afternoon. Pallbearers were Wayne Estal, Wendall Paul, Carmel Davis, Lloyd V. Stoaks, Richard Stoaks and Elmer Weaver. Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery.
