Alan Robert Jones, 79, of Grinnell died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at his home of a heart attack.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Feb. 15, in Herrick Chapel at Grinnell College. Memorials may be made to Grinnell College or to the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation to be used for the Library Building Fund.

He grew up in Tama, the son of Benjamin and Jean Sellman Jones. He graduated from Grinnell College in 1950, later earning the master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees from the University of Michigan. He devoted his entire teaching career to the history department at Grinnell College, retiring in 1995.

He had many intellectual interests which he maintained until his death, and was the author of several publications including "Pioneering, a History of Grinnell College." He also was active in local politics; a member of the Grinnell City Council for several years, and devoted to his students, Grinnell College and his family.

He is survived by his wife Jean of Grinnell; two sons Thomas and Dave; one daughter Katherine Koster; four grandchildren and one brother Benjamin Jones.
