OBITUARY; dated May 2, 1884

HOBART--In Minneapolis, Minn. C.W. Hobart, April 29th, of pneumonia, aged 37 years and 5 months.

The news of Mr. Hobart's death came like a shock upon this community. It had not been generally known that he was even sick. Only a week or two previous he had been in Grinnell, appearing to be in better health than usual. He had so long been one of the business men of this place and amongh the front rank, that it seemed as if the shaft had fallen in their midst. He was sick only about a week and his physicians had given him hope that he could be about his business in two or three days. There was a sudden change for the worse Monday, and dispatches were at once sent to his relatives. Dr. Henry Hobart, of Chicago, was the only on of them that arrived before he died. The remains were brought to this place and the funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10 o'clock.

C.W. Hobart was born in Arcade, Wyoming county, N.Y. He came to Grinnell in April, 1864, and during the same year went into the army as a hundred day man. Since that time he has been in business continually at this place, but six years ago he established a branch business at Minneapolis. At this place he has dealt principally, and of late years entirely, in lumber. At Minneapolis, he had mills in partnership with Billings Chatterton, and dealt largely in posts, telegraph poles, piling, etc., but he always regarded his home as at Grinnell.

Mr. Hobart was an eminent success as a business man, quick in his preceptions, and as clear as he was quick. He was active and alert and capable of seeing what there was in anything from a business point of view as any man we ever met. His estimate of men, as to their financial ability, was generally sound and protected him from losses. We never saw a man who made business more his business than Mr. Hobart. He seemed to live in it and for it. It almost appeared to be his recreation as well as his employment. Notwithstanding this devotion to business he was genial by nature, and enjoyed the intimate companionship of many of his associates.
