ERNEST GROVENBURG
Ernest Everett "Speed" Grovenburg, was born at Grinnell, Iowa, June 12, 1926. He attended the public schools and spent his entire life in the community of his birth.
For several years he worked for the Standard Oil Company, and for two years he served his country in the U.S. Navy. For the past two years he has been employed at the Donaldson Company in Grinnell.
About two weeks ago he complained of severe illness, and after a few days in a Grinnell hospital, Ernest was moved to Veterans Hospital at Iowa City where every effort was made to save his life.
He passed away Oct. 13, 1957, past 31 years of age. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, and all his grandparents.
Ernest--often called "Speed" by his family and friends--was an active youth and interested in mechanics and various machines. He lived with his mother in Grinnell and cared for her through the years.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ola Grovenburg; his brothers and sisters, Mrs. Maurice (Mildred) Kester, Grinnell; Mrs. Ralph (Helen) Strand, Gilman; Dennis W. of Des Moines; Mrs. William (Thelma) Fisher, and Lloyd K., both of Grinnell, and Mrs. Manly (Shirley) Lillie, of Gilman; one uncle, several cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Memorial services were held Oct. 16, 1957, at the Smith Funeral Home. The Rev. C.E. Kingsley officiated. Graveside services were held at Hazelwood cemetery by the Grinnell American Legion Post, with Commander Jack Day officiating.
Pallbearers were Wayne Puls, Walter Barnes, Bernard Sheets, William Stevenson, Paul Weber and George Wilson. Music was furnished by Ed Bohstedt.
