DR. BRADFORD, 58, DIES IN IOWA CITY

Dr. Curtis B. Bradford, 58, Oakes Ames Professor of English Literature at Grinnell College, died at 4 a.m. today (Thursday) at an Iowa City hospital.

Dr. Bradford who was born June 2, 1911 at Mattituck, N.Y., had been on the staff at Grinnell College since 1946 when he was named associate professor. He became a full professor in 1959 and was named Oakes Ames professor in 1961.

A 1923 bachelor of arts graduate of Wooster College, Dr. Bradford received his Ph.D. degree from Yale University in 1927. He studied at the University of Wisconsin for one summer. He had ben an instructor at Wisconsin from 1937 to 1941 and was an assistant professor at Rockford (Ill.) College from 1941-43.

On Aug. 15, 1941, he married Maria Gerson and to the couple four children were born -- Mrs. David (Maria) Paulsen of Portland, Ore., Lewis of St. Louis, Walter of Evanston, Ill., and Nancy, 16, at the family home.

Dr. Bradford was a well known Yeats scholar and had published several works on Yeats and Yeats' works.

Memorial services for Dr. Bradford will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 in Herrick Chapel on the Grinnell College campus.

Faculty speakers at the services will be Dr. Joseph F. Wall, Parker professor of history and Dean of the College, Dr. Kenneth A. Christiansen, professor of biology, and M.M. Liberman, professor of English.
