The Brooklyn Chronicle (Brooklyn, Iowa) Aug. 14, 1909

It is with a feeling of great sadness that we convey the news to our readers of the sudden death of little Merl and Verna Fogel, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Fogel, north of town. After an illness of only two days, of bowel trouble, Merl, who was almost four years old, died Wednesday, August 11th, while his little sister Verna who was two years and six months old, died Thursday, August 12th. Everything possible was done to save the little ones, but of no avail. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Friday afternoon August 13th, conducted by Rev. A.F. Eldridge. The remains were quietly laid to rest in Ivy Hill cemetery.

MALCOM DEATH MYSTERY

Some disease, the exact cause of which is unknown, brought sudden death to Lester, aged 3, and Verna, aged 2, the only children of Mr. and Mrs. George Fogel, of Malcom. Despite the efforts of five physicians, and the aid of post mortem examination, it has not been determined what caused the fatalities. It is believed, however, that is was some sort of intestinal disorder, probably due to poisoning of some kind or infection. Lester was taken sick first. A few hours later his baby sister was stricken. Both were taken seriously ill in a very short time, and within an hour both were dead. The physicians who were called were unable to agree on the cause, but none were certain what it was. A post mortem examination held on the body of the boy, showed that there was some disorder of the intestines.
