RITES HELD FOR DR. MATTHEWS

H. Burtis Matthews, M.D., a former resident of Grinnell, died of cancer April 24.

Funeral services were held at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis, Mo., April 27.

The son of the Rev. Harold S. and Grace Waters Matthews, he was born in Techow, Shantung, China. He lived in Grinnell from 1938 to 1942 and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1941. He attended Grinnell College, the University of Chicago and Harvard University Medical School.

Dr. Matthews worked on the staff of St. Elizabeth Hospital, Washington, D.C., the Mendocino State Hospital in Ukiah, Calif., and in private practice at Davis, Calif.

He had recently retired as director of the Family Practice Residency Program at the Lutheran Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; five sons by a previous marriage; a brother, Dr. Alden E. Matthews of Tokyo, Japan; and a sister, Charlotte Keating of Tucson, Ariz.
