OLD SETTLER GONE

James Clarence Quire Passed Away Early Wednesday Morning.

FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD THIS AFTERNOON

Most of His Active Life Had Been Spent in Jasper and Poweshiek Counties.

James Clarence Quire, the son of William and Carolyn Quire, was born at Carthage, Hamilton county, Ohio, August 29, 1851. His death came early Wednesday morning, December 13, 1922, following an intermittent sickness of three years, the last attack lasting just a week.

Mr. Quire came to Iowa with his parents, two sisters and one brother, when fourteen years of age and settled on a farm in Jasper county. The balance of his life has been spent in Poweshiek and Jasper counties and but few enjoyed a larger number of acquaintances and friends in the Sully and Lynnville communities.

He was married to Emma Jane Tucker at Grinnell August 11, 1884. To this union were born six children: Mary, Mrs. Louis Ent of Grinnell; Merrill B. of Kanawha, Iowa; Charles of Worden, Montana; Della of Grinnell; Alice, Mrs. Arthur Lundquist of Minneapolis; and Jessie, Mrs. James Reagen of Grinnell. These with the faithful wife, 6 grand-children, and 3 nephews, Dr. Frank Quire and Dr. Osten Quire of Lynnville and Fred Quire of Idaho live to mourn his passing. His parents, brother and two sisters preceded him in death and are buried at Lynnville.

While Mr. Quire never enjoyed the best of health, he took a sincere interest in affairs of the community. He was a writer of no mean ability and many times took that manner of expressing his individuality and his interest in civic affairs when his poor health prevented a more active participation. His accounts of the Old Settlers Reunions at Lynnville often appeared in the Grinnell papers. Being a little hard of hearing he was not a regular church attendant but was a student of the Bible and a firm believer in it's teachings and sought to carry them out in his home life.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home on south Broad street conducted by Rev. E.M. Gregson formerly of Ewart and a long time friend of the deceased. Interment was at Hazelwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Creamer, William Ent, Horace Ent, Roscoe Lewis, William Highfield and David Ditzler.
