"PAT" BROCK RITES FRIDAY
L.W. "Pat" Brock, 78, of 1307 Braod St. died Tuesday afternoon (March 21) at Grinnell General Hospital following a long illness.
The son of William R. and Kate McNally Brock, he was born Jan. 24, 1894, in Oskaloosa. He attended local schools and graduated from Oskaloosa High School. During World War I he served with the U.S. Army. In 1924 he came to Grinnell, and on Feb. 7, 1928, he was married to Mary Frey in Cedar Rapids. The couple had one daughter, Mary Ellen Brock of Grinnell.
Mr. Brock operated Brock's Famous Shoe Store at 901-1/2 Main St. from 1931 to 1936. From 1936 to 1950 he was in charge of the state employment office. In 1950 he was appointed acting postmaster, and in 1951 he became postmaster of Grinnell, an office he held until his retirement in 1964. Mr. Brock was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Grinnell Knights of Columbus, Focht-Tennant Post. No. 53 of the American Legion, and B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1266, in which he held a life membership. He was the first Poweshiek County chairman of the March of Dimes, a position he held for over 15 years.
Mr. Brock is survived by his daughter Mary Ellen; a sister, Mrs. F.C. (Alice) Van Derveer of Marshalltown; two nephews, William B. Van Derveer of San Francisco, Calif., and Max Van Derveer of Corpus Christi, Tex.; and a cousin, Dorothy A. Custer of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Mary, who died Aug. 3, 1971.
The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Brock will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Leo V. Kuebrich, pastor of the church, officiating. The Vigil service will be held at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at the church. Organist will be John W. Penne, and vocalists will be Mrs. Wayne Dayton and Miss Wilma Schmitz. Should friends desire, memorials in Mr. Brock's name may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Since his body was given to medical science, burial will be made at a later date in the Calvary section of Hazelwood Cemetery. Friends may call the Smith Funeral Home for additional information.
NOTE: In the obituary for Mary F. Brock, the surname Van Derveer appears as Van Deveer..
