OBITUARY

Mary Levina Applegate was born in Jasper county, Iowa, Dec. 4th, 1878, and came with her parents to to Poweshiek county, the following year. She graduated from the Searsboro high school in '95 and the following year entered the Brooklyn institute to complete her education preparatory to teaching. In July of the same year she was called home by the sudden death of her mother. Being the oldest of a family of five she now sought to take the mother's place in the care and direction of the younger children, and by efficient management, wise counsel, gentle guidance and tender sympathy, proved herself to be more than sister, always cheerful, helpful, tender and true, loved and trusted by all.

In the winter of '97-'98 she again entered school, but an attack of measles compelled her to give up her cherished plans. This sickness left her permanently weakened and she soon fell a prey to consumption of which she died at the home of her grandparents T.S. and Sarah Applegate, of Searsboro, Oct. 26, 1898.

After a brief service in the home, the remains were taken to West Liberty Christian church where the funeral services were conducted by the Rev. H.J. Coskett, of New Sharon. His subject being "The Many Mansions" John 15:23. The body was laid to rest in the West Liberty cemetery.

Miss Applegate heard and obeyed the call of the gospel and was buried with her Lord in Christian baptism, uniting with the Christian church in New Sharon in the winter of '95. She kept the faith consistently, and in the last days of her suffering she was strengthened and cheered by a living faith and a brighter hope.
