Services for John W. Lockhart, 46, of Des Moines who died after suffering a heart attack at his home Monday night, Jan. 4th, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Des Moines Methodist church. Burial services were held at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dewey Roland, Frank Dunlap, J.L. (Mubach?), Earl Safris and George Morris, all of Des Moines, and Don Cunningham of Grinnell.

John (Jack) William Lockhart was born November 25th, 1913 in Kellogg, Iowa, and passed away January 4th, 1960 at the age of 46 years. At age ten he moved to Las Vegas Nev., and lived in Nevada and on the west coast until moving to Grinnell, Iowa, in 1927 where he attended high school, graduating in the class of 1931.

On August 4, 1933 he was married to Lucille Gwin at Unionville, Missouri. They lived in Grinnell until they moved to Des Moines in 1941. They had lived in Des Moines for the past 18 years.

Mr. Lockhart served his country in the army during World War II. He entered May 8, 1944 at Camp Dodge and his date of separatiion was March 13, 1945 at Camp Carson, Colorado.

He graduated from Iowa Barber College February 9, 1946 and operated Jack's Army Post Barber Shop for ten yers from 1946 to 1956. During this time when housing was so short many returned servicemen and their families lived in the former Fort Des Moines housing area, he served this community as mayor. He had barbered at Moon's Barber Shop for the past two and one-half years.

He was a member of the Fort Des Moines Methodist church, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a delegate to the Polk County Labor Council of the barber's union.

He showed interest in the boys of the community by helping with Boy Scouts and working with the boys and men in their Little League ball teams. He had shown interest in the building of the new church (Fort Des Moines Methodist) and helped work with one of the teams during the drive for pledges to help make the new church a possibility. After leaving the housing area, Mr. and Mrs. Lockhart had lived in their home at 624 (Emma?) Ave.

He is survived by his wife Lucille and children, Karen Leigh 21 and Harry Ray 11. Also one sister of Des Moines and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1926 and his father in 1931.
