MRS. LILLIE MAY FLEENER

Lillie May Gilbert Griffith Fleener, daughter of Mr. and Mr. J.W. Gilbert, deceased, was born July 15, 1875, on a farm in Mahaska county, near Grinnell. She departed this life Nov. 5, 1950, at the age of 75 years.

She was one of a family of eight children, five boys and three girls. Three brothers, her two sisters and her parents preceded her in death. Those surviving are her two brothers, Amos Gilbert of Blue Point, and Fred of Scobey, Mont., her daughter, Mrs. Louise Hoskinson of Davenport, 7 grandchildren, and 1 great-grand child and many nieces and nephews.

When about five years of age she moved with her parents to Grinnell, settling on a farm five miles south of town for a short time. Later they moved into Grinnell where she spent the remainder of her life. Here she attended the Grinnell public schools, and was united with the Methodist church when a girl of fourteen years, under the leadership of Rev. Matt L. Hughes during his ministry here.

On January 25, 1893, she was united in marriage to H.V. Griffith, a Grinnell business man. He departed this life in the year 1926, having been a Grinnell citizen for 37 years.

On August 11, 1927, she was united in marriage to H.H. Fleener of Grinnell. He preceded her in death in the year 1934.

Her life was characterized by loyality and faithful attendance to the church and kindness and supreme service to others. She was highly respected during the many years of her life in this community.

Before leaving this life, she chose Luke 4: 36-40 for the Scripture to be used at her funeral and also the songs "Good night and Good morning" and "No Night There." Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery beside her first husband, Mr. Griffith.
