Brooklyn (IA) Chronicle; Feb. 14, 1924

Leonard Richard McCulloch was born October 30th, 1839, at Millersburg, Ohio. The family moved to Davenport when he was about ten years old. He spent most of his youth in and near Davenport. In the fall of 1861 he enlisted in Co. D of the 20th Iowa Infantry with which he served until the close of the war. He was very fortunate in that while his company was in many battles and many of his comrades were killed or wounded, he returned unharmed by the bullets of the enemy. He was associataed with nearly every department of the G.A.R. in an active way.

In 1872 he was united in marriage to Rachel Jane West, who passed away July 2, 1914. Their five children, Alfred M. of Boone, Iowa, Ed??? W. of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Josephine Stephenson of Eagle Rock, Calif., Miss Jessie M. of Brooklyn, Iowa, and Mrs. Carrie Sloan of Glendale, Calif., together with five grandchildren survive them.

They moved to this community in 1878 locating on a farm four miles north of Brooklyn, which was their home until they removed to Brooklyn in 1900. Mr. McCulloch was interested in everything pertaining to his home community and gave freely of his time and effort to the needs of the community.

He was of a family of eight children, two of whom survive him, W.S. McCulloch of Taylor Ridge, Ill., and Mrs. S.M. Ade of Davenport, Iowa. Mr. McCulloch had not been vigorous for several years but without much warning his life came to an end Friday noon, February 1, 1924.

Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon, February 7, in charge of Rev. E.W.F. Holler, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Interment was in the family lot in I.O.O.F. cemetery, Brooklyn.
