John Joseph Sloan was born in Ireland May 3rd, 1844, and died in Brooklyn, Ia., October 21st, 1913 at the age of 69 years, 5 months and 18 days.

As a young man he came to the U.S. and made his home in Pittsburg, Penn. until 1870, when he came to Brooklyn. Here he settled on a farm and became a successful farmer and feeder.

On September 27, 1866 he was married to Miss Lillie Orr, to which union four children were born. Mr. and Mrs. Sloan removed from the farm to Brooklyn about ten years ago to spend the days of the afternoon of their life.

Mr. Sloan was a member and regular attendant of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was also a member of the K. of P. lodge.

For nearly two years the family has noticed signs of failing health, but nevertheless his being suddenly stricken was a surprise and shock to them and everyone else.

He leaves to mourn his death, a wife and four children: Mrs. Anna I. Beatty and William R. of Des Moines, Burnside W. and Mrs. Margaret E. Forney of Brooklyn, besides other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held at the M.E. church, Wednesday October 22 at 2 o'clock p.m., Rev. S.E. Koons and Dr. I.N. Busby assisting the pastor, Rev. F.C. Edwards. The body was interred in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
