THE SON OF DARIUS THOMAS, ONE OF GRINNELL’S PIONEERS, IS DEAD

(1-20-1914 *Handwritten on article)

The death of Dr. J. B. Thomas, in a New Orleans hospital on January 6, removes a member of a family which was closely identified with the early history of Grinnell. Dr. Thomas’ father, Darius Thomas, came to Grinnell in 1854 from Maryland, just as the town was beginning to start an academy and built one of the first houses in town. It is now known as the Clifton house and stands just west of the Interior Telephone Company’s building on Fifth Avenue. Later, when he found that the college was coming here, Mr. Thomas removed to Newton and taught for thirty years in an academy which he started there. Dr. Thomas was born there in 1859. In 1884 he moved from Newton to Carthage, Mo., where he has lived constantly ever since. He went to New Orleans about five weeks before his death to take a rest and to enjoy a short period of post graduate study in Tulane university. Later it appeared that an operation was necessary for ulcers of the stomach. Death was caused by a hemorrhage following the operation.
