OBITUARY

Thomas Hoffman Hays

Thomas Hoffman Hays, the youngest son of Joseph and Elizabeth Hays was born in Frederick county Maryland, June 26, 1848, and died after a lingering illness at his home in Grinnell May 20, 1915.

He came with the family to Grinnell in October 1856. In April 1858, they moved to Chester township, where in December of the same year his only sister died. This was the first death in the township.

In 1866, he united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Grinnell, and in ’67 his membership was transferred to the Sonora church, he being one of the six charter members.

In February, 187(8?) he was married to Juliette Ludwick, who died in 1886(?). To this union were born two children, a son and a daughter, the boy dying in infancy and Hester at the age of sixteen.

In November 1893, he married Mrs. Nora Jonte at Montezuma. The next year they moved to Grinnell, where they have since resided. His membership was again transferred to the Grinnell church and he remained an active and official member till his death.

Brother Hays was always faithful and consistent in his Christian life, and came to the end of his earthly pilgrimage with a calm confidence that all was well.

He is survived by his wife and two brothers, D.F. Hays and J.T. Hays.
