Mrs. Priscilla Burroughs.

Priscilla, daughter of Richard and Sarah Breeden, was born in Jefferson county, Tenn. On May 18, 1829. Three years later her parents moved to Versailles, Ind. where she grew to womanhood.

In 1849 she was married to William Burroughs, and to them were born five sons and five daughters. Those who survive her are Mrs. Geo. Rose of Denver, Colo., Alfred Burroughs, and Mrs. A.W. Child of Grinnell, Mrs. A.W. Bartlett of Salem, Ore., and Mrs. B.D. Adams of Galesburg, Ill. All of whom were present at the funeral.

On Oct. 26, 1865, the train of wagons bearing this family passed through Grinnell to their new home in Hickory Grove, Jasper County, Iowa, where ten years of her active life were spent.

The hospitality of her home was denied to none, whether they came singly or in families—whether for the night or for weeks or months, as often was the case. Although her table seldom seated less than fifteen persons, she always found time to prepare her children for school and for the Sunday school and church services. Very early in life she became a Christian, and it is but just to say that every interest of the church and community had her hearty and untiring support.

Death had claimed two of her sons before she was bereft of her worthy companion in 1876, which left her with a family of eight children. When the time came to provide them with more and better school privileges, she removed to Grinnell, where her keen interest in their progress and that of the city, state and world, caused her to forget to grow old.

Although a great sufferer for many weeks during her last illness, and greatly desiring to be at rest, she bore it all with that Christian patience and fortitude which characterized her whole life.

Beside her children, she leaves two aged sisters, twenty-four grandchildren, and twenty-four great-grandchildren to hold her in grateful remembrance.

Her body was laid to rest beside that of her mother, husband and sons at the Hickory Grove cemetery.

The burial service was conducted at (the?) home by Rev. E.W. Cross, assisted by Mr. Noble and Harold F. Strong, and at the Hickory Grove church by Mr. Anson Moxley, who had known Mrs. Burroughs for about fifty years as a friend and neighbor, and by Rev. G.W. Rose, who was pastor at the old home church forty-three years ago. The music was furnished by Misses Helen Thomson, Floy Korns, Luciele (Cinhenhaner?), Mrs. Robert Hannay, Messrs Geo. Walker, L.W. Taylor and Paul Bartlett.

Relatives from a distance not previously mentioned were Dr. E. L. Dunn of LaGrange, Ill., Mrs Edith W. Burroughs and son Ward of Montour, Ia., Miss Nettie Shook of Shapsville, Ind., Hale and Ethel Adams of Galesburg, Ill and Mr. Howard D. Rose of Salina, Kas.
